WH Scott & Son supplies winch for the RRS Sir David Attenborough

A proud day for all at WH Scott & Son Engineers Ltd (WHS), as a project the team had worked on for over a year was unveiled last week in Merseyside. The WHS team had the pleasure of supplying a scientific mooring winch for the RRS Sir David Attenborough ship, famously first known as Boaty McBoatface.
The team were extremely honoured to have played a part in this pursuit of scientific advancement, which will provide scientists researching oceans, ice and atmosphere a floating laboratory with state-of-the-art facilities. With an essential part of research involving the need to deploy scientific mooring equipment from onboard the ship, a special purpose built scientific mooring winch was required and WHS had the privilege of supplying the equipment plus providing support on the design and testing of the winch.
“It was a great opportunity and a fantastic project to be involved in,” explained WHS Sales & Marketing Director, Marc Heath. “We worked closely with the team at the British Antarctic Survey to achieve their desired goal, so we can’t wait to see the winch in action and read about the ground-breaking research it assists with.”
Sir David Attenborough and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Merseyside on Thursday (26th October 2019) to formally name the infamous boat. Speaking during the ceremony, both Sir David Attenborough and the Duke of Cambridge drew attention to the rising concern that is climate change.
“It’s no news to any of you that the world is facing great, great problems and the most aware of that are the young people of today, who will inherit this world,’ explained Sir David. “There could be no more important function for any ship, anywhere in the world, than those which are going to be dealt with by this remarkable ship, at the cutting edge of science.”
Ice trials in the northern hemisphere are planned from March 2020, followed by a science rehearsal cruise from August 2020. The ship is scheduled to be fully operational from October next year.
