Last week, WH Scott & Son Engineers Ltd was proud to sponsor the National Shared Service Office’s (NSSO) inaugural Volunteer Day, which was held on Wednesday 27th March 2019.

A fantastic initiative coming from a staff forum who showed a great interest in giving back to the community, volunteers from the NSSO worked with Knockmitten Youth and Community Centre to help transform their garden, which was to be used in two ways:

  1. With the assistance of the local Men’s Shed group, the garden will be used to teach local teenagers how to plant and grow their own vegetables – this will be a great support to local youths, who may not have access to learn and develop these life skills otherwise.

  2. Twice a week, Knockmitten Youth and Community Centre provides meals to senior citizens from the area.  The vegetables from the garden will be used to make these meals – this service provides local senior citizens with an opportunity to get out of the house and meet other locals, providing a social outlet that may otherwise not be available to them.

WH Scott's donation ensured that the Centre had wood plants, trees, seeds and paving slabs, providing the volunteers with the materials needed to restore community garden. The cheque was presented to Knockmitten Youth and Community Centre by WH Scott & Son Managing Director, Patrick Doyle, who visited the site during the volunteer day on 27th March 2019.

“It’s was a fantastic opportunity for WH Scott to give back to our local community,” stated Patrick. “A brilliant idea from the National Shared Service Office, the Knockmitten Youth and Community Centre does so much for so many, it’s a privilege to have been involved.”
